U12 MIni League v Blessington 2013-04-26 12:01:00

Our U12 boys travelled to Blessington last Monday to take on the home team. We had 23 players available on the day, so we were able to fill two 11-aside teams with one sub. In selecting one of the teams, Manager Billy Kenny decided to play normal midfield player Alan Barrett in the forwards to add some punch to our attack and selected a young midfield pairing of Adam Martin and Jack Hanlon. Within five minutes of the start, this plan had worked a treat. With Adam and Jack well able to hold their own at midfield, Alan was causing all sorts of trouble for the Blessington defence. After playing against the wind in the first half Baltinglass were 6-8 to 0-1 up at half time. Unfortunately Alan Barrett got injuried while kicking a score two minutes into the second half and had to be carried off, but the rest of the players did not let this affect them and continued to dominate the game with Aaron Corcoran coming more and more into the game, they went on to win by 10-15 to 2-4.

Now over to the other game which was going on at the same time. This Baltinglass team were playing against a bigger and stronger Blessington 11, with most of our players giving away height advantage to their direct opponent. This looked like Blessingtons best 11 players, our lads were really up against it. We played with the wind in the first half but were down by a couple of points down at half time. With some great words of encouragement in their ears going out for the second half from Sean and Culm, the lads put in a huge effort. With Blessington now playing with the wind and a very strong midfield pairing, things did not look great. But this second half performance was full of grit and passion from our lads and despite all the odds went on to win by 3-8 to 2-9. We had some heroic performances from John Keogh and Arun Daly Danne in midfield and Christopher Grimes and Jason Steed in defence. Gavin Delaney pulled off some top class saves in goals, diving at full stretch to stop a certain goal, with Evan Frahill scoring the winning goal, but this truly was a great team performance, with every player giving it their all.

Well done lads.
